“It’s Raining in Magic City:” Gholdengo for Atlanta Regionals

Cut or Tap Subs, how are we feeling for Atlanta Regionals this coming week? I hope you all feel semi-prepped going into this final week and you’re getting close to choosing your deck! My testing has pretty much concluded, with the exception of some fun rogues I’ve been enjoying on the PTCG Live ladder. I’ve spent so much time on the big three and feel like those lists are quite refined. In my last article, I went over Tera Box and some key points on the format as a whole. This piece will elaborate on one of those points – none other than the Cheese Man himself, Gholdengo ex. Gholdengo is something I’m quite familiar with, as I’ve written an article on it previously, focusing on Jelle Van Kampen’s success with the build he popularized. We will go over two different builds, one traditional and one off the wall, explaining the techs and engines used to navigate through the Journey Together format. Finally some matchup info on the big three and how to deal with Gholdengo threats.

Why Gholdengo ex?

Gholdengo ex has a lot of built-in strength before we even dig into meta presence. Journey Together Standard is quite clunky outside of the top-tier decks, so having an ability like Coin Bonus built into your attacker allows you deck space for extra consistency where other decks must have an ex-engine separate from their damage. Another factor I pointed out in my last article is that uncapped damage is an advantageous attribute in new formats or rotations, because it allows you the flexibility to OHKO any random Pokemon you may run up against while others are trying out new ideas.
