Five months in from its release, Pokémon TCG Pocket is still dominating the mobile space with a constant stream of new impactful expansions and other major improvements to the app. A trading feature was introduced in January which, while still in need of some adjustments, makes card acquisition much easier than before. Most recently, last week’s update included the highly anticipated ranked ladder, including a public leaderboard for the highest tier in the game—something Pokémon TCG Live has still failed to deliver in the almost two years since the sunsetting of Pokémon TCG Online.
The metagame has also undergone rapid and dramatic development as the card pool has almost tripled in size since the game’s release, and the first step for anyone interested in attempting to climb the new ranked ladder is to understand it, especially the impact of the latest mini-expansion Shining Revelry.
NEW DECK: Darkrai ex / Giratina ex / Druddigon

The most promising Pokémon from Shining Revelry is undoubtedly Giratina ex, thanks to its Broken-Space Bellow Ability powering itself up while you dedicate attachments elsewhere. The card functions very similarly to the combination of Space-Time Smackdown’s Magnezone with Genetic Apex’s Magneton, which dominated the format alongside Darkrai ex. Both Darkrai ex and Magnezone fell from the top tier after the release of the Triumphant Light expansion, but Giratina ex seems to be enough of an upgrade over Magnezone to push Darkrai ex back into the spotlight.
